Set out yesterday morning to do a planned 70 mile ride to Lancaster and back on my nice carbon-fibre race bike. Did about 3.5 miles and crashed
Phoned my brother who picked me up and took me to A&E, then the day just got worse and worse. Lots of pain and couldn't move my right arm much. They cut off my cycling stuff, gave me a morphine injection which hurt and made me sick, and x-rayed my shoulder. I've damaged the AC joint or something like that. Can't take NSAIDs because off the ulcer I had in December/January and my shoulder and neck hurt. Had a migraine with flashing lights because of it and have been sick too.
Not sure what happened, one second I'm riding along with a smile on my face then all of a sudden my front wheel is running against the curb and I go over the front and the bike comes down on top of me. The hospital only looked at my shoulder, but I hurt all over.
The bike didn't do to well either and I trashed my helmet too

PS: Also feeling really sorry for myself

that sucks. Hope you get better soon.0

Ow, that sounds nasty! Hope it all heals soon. Any word on when you'll be up and running again?0

Ouch!
I damaged my A/C joint a few months ago, so I can really sympathise, hope it heals nice and quick for you.
Do you have a big lump because of it?
My advice:
Get physio as soon as the pain permits (or as soon as you can face it) - it really helped me.
Also might be worth you considering this:

A mate of mine bought one after a very nasty collision with a tree totalled his A/C a few years ago, and it helped hugely.

Did you bash your head hard?
Do you have migraines so bad you are sick with any regularity? It sounds more like a concussion and if the medics did not do anything specific for you for it maybe you could draw their attention to it?
I am not a doctor!0 -
Sorry to hear about your crash. Continue to feel very sorry for yourself, it is the right thing to do and it helps lots!
I missed the back of a car the other day by about 17 millimetres after it stopped while I was looking up the road ahead (my fault, I was too close). As I brought the bike to a halt along the verge, I counted myself VERY fortunate not to be in your position.
The difference between crash and not crash is really tiny.0 -
Thanks for the replies.
I won't know just how bad the injury is until I go back to the hospital's fracture clinic to have my shoulder checked out. Having limited movement/use of my right arm is doing my head in. Everything I try to do has turned into a major task. Just opening a tin of soup today was an achievement, and my self extraction from bed this morning would have been comical to watch.
I don't think I've done any damage to my head (thanks to Giro). I tend to get the flashing light type migraine when I have any tightness in my neck muscles, and the being sick is a common side effect of morphine. Apart from lots of bruises appearing, stiffness in my thumbs and legs, the only real discomfort is the right shoulder which is quite swollen.
Hope you guys managed to get out over the weekend. Apart from getting my shoulder back into shape, I need to get the bike repaired and replace the helmet and clothing that got trashed. Looks like I'll be parting with some more money at Paul Hewitt's very soon.
Thank again

Just wanted to add that the nurses at Chorley Hospital are really nice
Just wish I could have brought one home with me :roll:0 -

The nurses in Chorley hospital are indeed nice. I conveniently crashed just outside Chorley hospital on the A6 back in November. The skin on my knee still peels!
Rest up and as hard as it may be try and enjoy the time off! It's all good.0
