Grrrrr Just finished a night shift to find some B*****d has vandalised my lock, making it impossible to move my bike. They manged to remove the centre of the lock turning it from this:

to this (only not nearly so neatly)

I guess I've got to figure out how to get the lock off now (where did I put those bolt cutters?). Security reckon they've got him on camera in the act though, so hopefully something should come of it.

Oooo, a sign that they're going to come back themselves with bolt croppers whilst you leave your bike there for a day whilst you sort some out.

I've got my fingers crossed for you.

Make sure you report it to the polis first, will help with update of bike crime figures and if caught in act of bolt cutting will save a trip to the station ;)

Thought of that; a second lock is going on in the next hour or two just in case.

Lie in wait with another lock - a big one!

    This is a definite trick.

It allows you to be quite blatant and use big tools because if anyone asks or queries then you have proof that "Your" lock has been damaged and you have to cut it off. Most casual observers will be fooled.

    SOLUTION:

Stolen transit van, 3 of the biggest mates you have clad is SAS style gear, conduct covert observations of the little herbert coming back to nick your steed then as he gets on to cycle it away - swoop into action. Then its off to an abandoned warehouse/dark forest where Mafia style retribution can be sought. Justice - swift and harsh. Lets face it without fingers is he going to nick another bike?

Need to get out more........and stop admitting my crimes in open forum!!!

    Ouch

I assume you're referring to 'broken' as opposed to 'amputated' fingers? I pray I never upset you...

It's just a hill. Get over it.

Yeah I reckon a nice fixie on full spin should have the desired finger removal power!!!

I'm actually cool, calm and collected...just think we have to help ourselves in this country now. No-one else seems to but that's another topic in another forum!

.....off to dump my old carpet in the local woods!

Any recommendations for a replacement lock, budget below £30, as I (obviously) have to get a new one now.

Edit: Was thinking of this (clicky) sort of thing

I'd have a look at Abus - and get the top of the range.

The rule of thumb is the cost of the lock should be at least 10% of the value of the replacment bike, so if you can replace it for £300 then the e-bay lock is fine

i thought they'd (Kryptonite i believe, though i'm open to correction on that bit) solved that little problem with some of their D-Locks 18 months, maybe 2 years, ago. Cost them a pile of cash too if i remember right.

Back to the OT - I don't get this. Why would anyone fiddle about taking the middle out if they were going to come back and boltcropper it ? . Unless taking the middle out renders it 'unlocked' i suppose but then why bother boltcroppering it at all, why not just nick it there and then
Morning route (when i don't get the train)

    Evening route ,

They break the lock, owner can't get the bike away, owner leaves the bike longer than normal (perhaps overnight), scum comes back later (perhaps at night) and takes the lock off with tools.

If anyone questions said scum, scum says "Some terwat has broken my lock, so I've got to cut it off." And they leave him to get on with it.

    I have decided upon a visible deterrent, in addition to a lock;

I think the theory is more normal with glue or similar. Mess up the lock with something that can be done quickly, then come back with heavier equipment when you are less likely to be spotted i.e. at night.

I would think (but I am not an expert) that this would seem more like a failed attempt to open it. Which may or may not mean they will come back.
Training, highway design and increasing cycle numbers are important to safety. Helmets are just a red herring.

If you can stretch to it (and have the body strength to lug it about) Get yourself a Kryptonite New lock, or a Fahgeddaboutit as they are known.

I've had one for ages, never any problems, completely bullet/pikey/chav proof.

(and it makes a good deterrent when wielded against scumbags attempting to steal your bike from under you)

    Buyers Guide - locks at http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/category/ ... ries/locks

Based on the results published in C+ sometime last year, the decent D-locks survived the second first test and some time in the second, more serious one. Many of the cable locks were cut in a few seconds, some could even be snipped by secateurs etc.

OnGuard and Trelock look good value, the more expensive Kryptonite and Abus models seemed most difficult to break in the tests.
