Well i am well pissed off

Bought an Orange 5 AM from Lesiure Lakes
and four rides in and Not fallen OFF

Get a strange noise when changing in lower gear
then chain snaps.

Taken to a local Bike Store Cycle Surgery and turns out
the bike has a bent rear Dereller which also not only broken the chain
but also broke the rear mech too, and now £ 135,99p OUT OF POCKET !!

Will be contacting Leisure Lakes tomorrow and also contacting
Orange Mountain Bikes for releasing a bike with poor
quality conponentry.
And this part only costs £ 8-10 pounds

Anyone else had problems with the above companys regarding
setup or bad conponents

mech hangers get bent, did you not check your bike before each ride?

How do you transport your ride? in the bck of the car? on a rack....

Lay flat in the back of my Ford Galaxy

How does a rear mech get bent when you aint crashed the bike?

easily as that is what it is meant to do bend so you dont damage the frame.

How does it bend? by choosing poor lines through rocks trees etc which can hit the mech which in turn can cause the hanger to bend.

If the hanger was fine at the start of the ride you must have done something that caused excesive force to be put through the hanger causing it to bend, they do not just bend. I have seen and had them just fall of on some designs.

so does this mean that you will not be recommending and Orange in every one of your posts from now on?

Theres no rocks in Epping Forest just open un-even Clay soil
    and exposed roots.
And the bike goes over roots and nothing to catch ethier side
    of the roots
Plus no narrow deep single track.

There is nothing to catch it on and you would have to knock the
derellar hard to bend it to do this damage.

Have not tried the bike on the rough stuff IE Rocks and shingle
yet what it is designed for..

The bike did make the same noise when in lower gear on
first ride but stopped, but this time round different story.

And the bike has only been riden approx two hours per one
    ride.
Dont know how you could bust a derellar in Epping Forest
    just mushy open clay soil.

I would great bike but cant understand why supply
a bike with a bent derellar un-less the bike had fallen
    over in the shop???

Have orderd two new derellars one to replace this one
thats been bent back for now and one for the back of
my camleback for when shit happens

Nick is spot on - the hanger is there to protect the frame, even with quite minor knocks, ones you may not even be aware you had. Better replacing a hanger than the frame!

Also be aware that bikes need and are designed to be regularly adjusted. Parts bed in, and need servicing - usually just a tweak a of the barrel adjuster with a mech.

    Yes all this i agree

But not when you pick up the bike, lay flat in the back of the Galaxy
take home stand up, the following day put back in Galaxy and then from the
off it starts making a noise in the lower gears.

This was being as when i was in the lower carnk cog
on the first gear IE One on the back cassette

And then changing up all was ok.

I aint even seen a bit of mud at this point
this was in the car park.

Then rolled down a hill to set rebound and noticed
the same noise when climbing up the hill.

No roots no rocks no fallen branches at this point of trying
to set the rebound on both shocks
  • If you bought the bike from LL why take it elsewhere for a repair that you consider a fault of the bike? Surely the first port of call is the supplying dealer.

Re the breakage: Its not unheard of for a stone/twig etc to get hooked into the chain and lock the rear mech. This will cause damage to the hanger and/or the mech itself. You wouldnt even know it had happened til the bike stopped.

Magic Jonhson i Live in East London Lesiure Lakes are miles away

Just that they had the bike i wanted and Cycle Surgery dont keep
stock of Orange 5 or there larger models and would have to have
waited long time for the colour etc.

Also Cycle Surgery had noticed that there was play in the head tube and fork?

And these forks are the 36'r dont know where i ment to have done this!!

I remember bending the rear mech and hanger about 1 month after I got my scott. Riding it through the local woods when it was really windy and a chunky birch 'twig' took a fancy to the rear mech. Next thing I knew was the hanger was bent as and the rear mech was turned inside out upside down and bent. That prompted me to go for the short cage rear mechs on both my klein + scott. SInce then then no problems touch wood. Generally speaking though I would have thought quite a force is required to bend either component.

I find it strange that a chain should also break, again if correctly set up these things are pretty damn tough. How many links were there in the chain. Were there any prior indications that all was not well with your drivetrain?

This and the mech hanger falling off the P7 in WMBs test.

Could it be that Orange is actually at fault?!

I know they seem to be near worshipped by many but it seems a bit of a coincidence.

My rear mech has a huge scrape mark on it from a rock or something. Can't say i ever noticed hitting anything. Just goes to show that its possible to give it a good bang and not realise at the time.

I've had more new chains break on me that old chains, if that makes sense.

Usually because I haven't joined them very well, I expect.

I can understand this. You don't expect to buy a bike costing so much and then have the thing break on you with little use.

    but.....

I also agree with the comments about the rear mech, its a sod. I had 2 or 3 go on me on my first GT, a small twig, a light knock, even when its in the car and the bike slides to the back of the boot and the mech hits the tailgate, if the mech becomes slightly out of line, the mech hanger will snap to stop breakage to the frame.

You need to get spare mech hangers to take with you when you are riding, its rare that you'll need to replace the mech itself.

Also the next time you are on the bike and you hear a noise, no matter how small, from the back end stop get off and make sure everything is in line and hunky dory. The noise you heard might have been an indication that there was an issue, I know this because it hapenned to me.

Thank you GT Destroyer that all makes sence but i have a Ford Galaxy
without any seats in the back and always leave bike laying brake side down.

But this noise in the gears was at the start of the ride in the Epping forest car park.

Jummer I picked mine up from Leisure Lakes in Bury.
What was the out come of this bike when you returned it?

Thank guys must say double check your new bikes before
    walking out the shop

grant way the bike hasnt been returned mainly because we just put it down to one of those things ,i fixed it on the trail anyway the gears i am going to have aplay on monday when we go out again, and the bike was mail order so alot of faff to send back i think it just needs a play with the barrel adjuster and that will sort the gears skipping ,i have read a few times about gears and chain skipping abit when new it didnt happen that many times anyway
