bike shop build meltdown

Hello
I put my bike into the shop to swap all of my stuff over to a new frame. I mentioned to them that it may need a new bottom bracket (british as opposed to Italian) and they said "no worries" and they would call me if there were any problems.
Anyway I went there yesterday and they have fitted a Campag Record bb as it was they only one they had at an astonishing price of £105 for the bb. They did all of this without asking me first.
My questions are:
1. Is this (as I think) a very high price to pay for a record bb...
2. If the bb has a carbon drum (not sure of which record model it is) will that be a problem for riding on really rough terrian - like Pave in Paris Roubiax for example
Thanks in advance as I alsways get reallt useful information from this forum

Q1 Yes Expensive and should NOT have been Done. If Shop only had record they should have called you or fitted the record one at the cost of your replacement.
Q2. Pro's used this Bb for years and Many won races in the classics. You have NOTHING to worry about in terms of Strength and reliability.0 -
what chainset is it ???
..i ran a record pista bracket on my road fixed for ages no proble with the carbon etc...
it only cost me about 45squid tho ...
seems high price ...0 -

Not quiet sure what you mean by that.
But one thing is certain - and that is that if Campagnolo sells it then they reckon its good enough for you and me.0 -

Hi there.
£105 is not an outrageous price for a record bottom bracket - it is a lot of money though...
You won't have any problems with the carbon shell, so if you can afford it just leave it in. If it's too much, ask the shop to swap it out for something a bit cheaper, it will only take them 10 minutes.
Cheers, Andy0 -

Record BB should NOT have been fitted without your say-so.
Do you need a Record bottom bracket? Probably not even though they are very nice and will last ages. £105 for a record bb is average price btw.
I would ask them for remove the bottom bracket and replace with something more suited to your bike and your wallet.
A phone call to you before commencing fitment would have been the correct thing to do, sounds like they are opportunists out for a quick sale. Can't be very busy obviously.0 -

Yeah I think that you're right about opportunists which I tend to find with a lot of bike shops.
I think I will ask them to change it. The call after the assessment is pretty key and I did call ahead to say that I may need to change the bb.
If they don't play ball I will name on shame them on this thread
Thanks0 -
Veloce needs 111mm, Record is 102 or so. I don't think it is the correct BB. Veloce ones are less than 20 pounds, and the nicer Centaur ones are only a tenner more.....0
-
Record carbon are also 111mm as far as I know0

Record bottom bracket at Surosa UK is 59.95. Add 10 minutes of labour to fit it - 69.95?
That's 35 quid less than they're asking. I can't imagine how 105 quid can be considered "average price". What do these guys pay for a KitKat? A fiver?0 -
is that £105 all-in - i.e. they moved all your parts over, fited a record BB and charged £105 all-in - cos that doesn't sound too bad to me
but if you mean that the record BB was specifically £105 then that sounds like a lot and i agree that they should have called you first as a minimum0 -
Kick them square in the nuts. It's the only way.

£105 is just for the part
I've since been told that the 111mm record bb is only compatible with a triple chainset so its not the write part anyway - I'm going to get them to change it.
I'm going to buy another bb and take it in there and ask them to correct the problem.0 -
I believe (if the chainset is a double) you need a 111mm symmetrical BB. Campagnolo still make this in Record version, although the Record & Chorus chainsets from ~ 1998(ish) to the advent of Ultra-Extort used a 102mm axle. They also now manufacture the 111mm asymmetrical Record BB specifically for 1998-UT range triples. Doubles other than Record & Chorus used 111mm symmetricals, and appropriate BBs are readily available from about fifteen quid up. Check any website for prices. Don't pay 105. The comments that this price is in any way reasonable are imprudent at best.0
