Well from what I can see on this forum you get asked the question of which bike to chose a hell of a lot, so I will keep it brief. Now I've spent hours looking through reviews and guides and the sticky'd guide (which bike - on here) and Ive narrowed it down to 4, mongoose tyrax elite, Giant Terrago Trail 2008, GT avalaunch 2.0 2008, xtc 4.5 (but i was put off by the man in the bike shop saying "to be honest with you we have had a lot of problems with the TruVativ Cranks and bottom bracket on this model" so what I want to know is which has the best specs and the most bang for my buck as I really only want to spend £300 tops £400

Worth spending the 400 as get a lot of features found on higher priced money. For an all round bike for trails, moors and the woods, take a look at the Carrera Kraken and GT Avalanche 2.0 (as you mention). Great bikes, hydro discs, and damped forks.0

would you reccomend the terrago trail 2008 because I jus found it for £299.99 at ashscycles, otherwise I will probs go for the GT 2.00

Its good value, but go and have a sit on it, see how it feels. No good if you hate the ride.0
