Rapid-fire shifter problem

My left (front) rapid fire shifter on my bike has become very annoying. Randomly when I try to change up from the second to third ring it seems unable to pull the cable and I have to press the shifter 3 or 4 times before it will bite and change. I stripped down the unit partially but was unable to identify the cause of the problem. I looked online but all shifters seem to be sold in pairs.

Does anybody know where I can buy just a left hand shifter?

Or if I buy a pair, my bike is currently 8 speed but most shifters are now 9 speed. Can I change from 8 speed to 9 speed by changing the shifters plus the rear cassette (+ chain)?
