Sora to Ultegra upgrade - advice required
I have a spare set of Ultegra 10-speed levers, which I would like to put on my winter trainer, currently equipped with 8-speed Sora. If I put on a 10-speed cassette and chain, will the Sora rear mech (and chainset) cope? I am not sure if the rear mech will travel the correct distance for each gear step? Will an 8-speeed chainset be ok with a 10-speed chain? Any advice gratefully received! :?: :?:

There are a couple of issues here that you need to look at. First is wether your rear wheel will take a 10 speed block. The dishing on your rear wheel will more than likely be fine for 8 or 9 speed, but probably not ten. This could cause one set of problems. Second, the rear mech may or may not work with the 10 speed block, depending on which ratio you go for. If you went for, say 11 - 23 (as an example) it may work, as it is still within a short cage range (assuming your sora mech is short cage). However, if you go for a 11 - 26 block, then the mech may not have the clearance available. Movement from high to low is determined by the shifters, and the tension placed on the cable when you operate them, so the gear steps may be right but it may foul on the cassette. The chainset itself may cause a problem, as the chain for a ten speed drive is thinner that an eight or nine speed. If you use an eight speed chain, you will get rear shift problems as it is too wide for the cassette, and if you use a ten speed chain, you will get front shift problems as the chain will be too narrow for the chainset.
Sorry to be so negative, but this is probably what you will be looking at.0 -
Thanks - rear wheel is not a problem, as I have a spare fitted with a 10-speed cassette, and I am sure that the rear mech cage will cope, as the old 8-speed cassette is 11-26. The only question that seems to remain is whether the Sora chainset will cope with a 10-speed chain. anyone out there tried it?0

Cannot be the best solution, since as said before in this post that a 10-spd chain is narrower than a 8-spd, so shifting will be a problem0

If the wheel will take a Shimano 8sp cassette, it'll take 9sp or 10sp as well - the 10sp comes with a spacer (aka big washer !) which you need when fitting to a Shimano 8/9sp hub
(a 10sp-only hub on the other hand works with the 10sp cassette with no spacer, and so you can't fit 8sp or 9sp cassettes)
As for chainset, I fitted a a 10sp system on my Spesh Allez to replace the 8sp Sora and used it for a while with 10sp shifters and chain, 9sp f&r derailleurs and the original Spesh-badged Sugino chainset it came with.
Front shifting was fine, you don't have to worry that the chain is so narrow it'll fall down between the rings.0
