Running a 9speed cassette with 8 speed shifters?

quite simply would this be possible? and what would be the implications, if any? thanks in advance.

    no it wouldn't be possible, how are you going to get into the 9th gear??

    the spacing is different, the chains are different widths. so the shifter pull different cable. 9 spd cassettes needs a 9 spd chains and shifters. and mixed any other way.

    well i wasnt planning on it lol! but could you effectively have one ring being "rudundant?" and just shift between the other 8?

    It will not work because the spacing between the cogs on a 8spd & 9spd are different, the whole cassette is the same width, but the inter cog spacing is different, nothing to do with getting that 9th gear.

    No, the shifter pulls a different amount of cable per click. Just doesnt work!
