Ok not sure if this is for this forum but here goes my commute involves a 12 mile each way trip wthh a nice little hilly bit on the way into work.
I am 17 stone ex rugby player 47 years old ok fit but could lose a few pounds really if I am honest, I cycle at around 15mph averidge I guess as have tourer and pannier, Has anyone got any ideas how much in the way of calories i would burn on a round trip of 24 miles.

Hi Pete, I have a similar commute of 13 miles each way. The calorie counter on the HRM tells me I use anything between 550-650 calories in an hour of commuting in level 1. For me this is 128-138 bpm. According to the sport science chappie I went to see 3 years ago, this is about correct....

Ok thanks for the info I guess mine commute takes me around 45 minutes depending on weather etc how I feel so reckon 1000 calories sounds about right for 24 miles !!

My HRM gives me a reading of around 750 calouries for my 13 mile ride.(80kg/5'8"/32yo)

...and take off the number of calories that you'd have burnt in that hour anyway (before deciding which pie to have!)...

All interesting stuff and I guess its not an exact sciens as there can be many diferences ie weight of rider, speed, hilly flat., weather, temp and time.

I guess I can safely say about 1000 calories to cycle 24 miles 12 each way I am 47 and 17 stone 4

Slightly different, but Trail magazine this month has a wee chart showing how many pints you burn off climbing various mountains 8)

You can also add 'fitness level' to that - the more you cycle, the more efficient your body becomes at cycling so the less you exert yourself to achieve the same speed/distance.

I would take all of those calorie counting HRM's with a very large pinch of salt

The only real way to do it is with a power meter - it knows what power you are putting out and for how long (power is energy/time)

By distance - if you kill yourself at lactate threshold, or you ride it easily the calories burned should be exactly the same (give or take, im ignoring the effect of increased wind resistance at higher speed) the only thing that will change is the type of calories burned - low HR you burn more fat and less carbs, high HR you burn more carbs and less fat - thats why all the lardarses in the gym spend 2 hours doing very little work on the elipticals. By time, obviously the harder you work, the more calories you burn

Once you start to use a power meter, you realise how stupid the calorie readings some HRMs give.

My HRM takes reading of age/weight into consideration, is this still a moo point?

I'm only 8 stone, and I use around 800 calories on a 20 mile round trip, so unless your commute is particularly flat (mine's very hilly), I would guess 1000 is a pretty conservative estimate.

    Me too!!! I put mine in, and the calorie calculator is pretty close (according to my Garmin) and it says;

    Activity Time Calories
    Cycling 120 minutes 1355

    Total minutes: 120
    Total calories: 1355
    1000+ calories:
If you’re burning more than 1,000 calories in one day, you may be over-doing it. Don’t forget that over-exercising can lead to injuries such as muscles sprains and fractured bones. It’s also important to make sure you’re eating enough calories to replace the energy you’re using up. Poor diet and a lot of exercise can weaken the immune system and lead to brittle bones.

1,120 calories for me it seems, which is more than I thought. The wind this week has made it seem like about 2,000 a day.

cjw - not sure where you're getting this 1000 calories per day is too much... last month i did a training camp for 9 days & on 1 day i did about 5+ hrs in the saddle clocking nearly 90 miles steady state. according to the HRM calorie counter i used over 3200 calories. my HRM is also programmeable with my age/weight/activity, so at about 600 cals/hr that is about correct...
