Mavic R-SYS

I have just purchased some Mavic R-SYS wheels. Are they supposed to make a loud cracking noise like the spokes are going to snap when you sprint out of the saddle? The rear wheel has just been off to Mavic even before I used it because the metal spokes weren't tight enough when it arrived. It seems you cannot get these adjusted in a shop and I daren't touch them as I have no experience adjusting carbon spokes.

Has anyone got these wheels and had the same problem? I vaguely remember reading a review that stated the spokes take a little time to settle in but this might be my imagination. I have literally only used them on one ride so far. I really wanted a solid set of wheels that didn't need constant adjusting and I was hoping these would be the answer.

It could be the spokes unwinding a bit and settling in under load. wouldn't normally be that loud a sound ... more of a "ping" type noise.

I suggest you contact the person you bought them from and explain to see if it's normal.

By the way, solid factory built wheels are not difficult to come by these days. R-SYS should be one such pair (at a price!).

Thanks for that. I have heard a similar noise from my previous wheels when some buffoon I took them to twisted some of the bladed spokes and they had to unwind. What concerns me with these wheels is that there is not much tension on the carbon spokes and if they do twist I fear they would splinter into a million pieces or even my legs. I'm going away for a week but when I get back I'll have to give them a serious test.

All the journos have also said how stiff and solid these wheels are.

the wheel is a new concept ... but i doubt you have anything to worry about them exploding ... unless you crash of course.
  • Your Local Mavic Dealer can adjust these for you. Sounds like uneven spoke tension on the drive side evening out.

Get them looked over by your dealer. If not Happy return them
