I'm feeling pretty proud of myself - I've been commuting on my bike for a year now (and have also been car free for roughly the same duration).

Apart from just under 5000km under the wheels of my commute machine, I have also (thanks in part to guys on this forum) picked up a bit of an education and hopefully some good habits (like actually stopping at red lights).

Amazingly the transition was very easy - and I can't ever see myself going back. Plus my wife reckons I've become quite buff - which is always great to hear.

Anyhow, just thought I'd share. :D

  • Well done !!

I clocked my 1000 miles since Christmas on the way home yesterday which I was chuffed about.
I only do 2 or 3 times a week as it's a 42 mile round trip, but i hate driving now and hopefully i'll push it up to 3 or 4 times a week.

It all gets easier from here as we get into Spring (apart for the queue for the single shower at work )

    Glad you're enjoying it !

Must have started about the same time as me, Ive been cycle commuting about a year now as well, been through the winter (although I think last summer was worse...) Done about 3000 miles commuting now probably not far off the same distance as well, odd how when I had a car I was doing 12000 miles a year... Was work really only 25% of my mileage? didnt seem it...

I know for me I dont WANT to go back, but I know if I have a car again the temptation will be strong on rainy days or just days when I feel a bit off and slowly but surely Id slip again. Im lazy like that :D

Yeah Dave, I think we started around the same time.

Know what you mean about the car temptation - I've been contemplating buying a car - but I know that pretty soon we'd be using it to go get the groceries instead of using the trailer, etc. etc. The slippery slope.

I started cycling in late September last year, so I've yet to enjoy a spring/summer/autum...had plenty of winter though :)

Thought if I could do it once a week over winter, then I should be able to do it twice a week in the summer... :0) Today was my second time this week, so I'll see how I feel tomorrow

I'm not in the office all the time, so the 26 mile round trip is dependent on work (and weather)

Not necessarily. My family has one car and my wife often says to me, on days she doesn't need it, that i should take it. 9 out of 10 times, i'll say no but i am can't exactly put my finger on why. I don't consider myself a cyclist and i don't do any leisure-time cycling (so not some lycra freak [no offence to lycra freaks!]), but i just don't want to drive. It will be quicker, but more frustrating, i'll be half asleep and cold when i get to work and probably still fuming from the day when i get home. I just don't want to drive, even when the option is there. Maybe it's rose-tinted glasses on your part and this change will happen in you?

I've been cycle commuting for 8 months now, every day bar a handful for icy conditions. I'm a lycra freak - have been for 22 years, but not on weekdays - that's trackie bottoms with shorts under.

Opted not to take a car parking pass, so I can't actually park at work (well I could if I pushed it) but my employer is soon to charge for parking, and fortunately, that also means us cyclists will get better facilities.

The bike is faster than the car - a good 10 mins faster door to door, and twice as fast as a bus (8 miles each way). And I don't need to go out training after work, as it's been done during the commute.

My car sits on the drive all week - usually give it a run at weekends to keep it ticking over !
