Chain size for a single speed...

Right, this isn't necessarily a mountain biking question, but there wasn't a maintenance section on the beginners and family page!
My girlfriend has a single speed cruiser, and the other day the chain came off, when I had a look one of the links was bent, so I took it to a Hawk's cycle jut round the corner and got them to fix it. Just went out for a ride this evening and they obviously haven't as the link is still bent and the chain keeps coming off. Decided it is probably best if I just fix it rather than take it back to them.
So, i have two questions! Firstly, how do I know which size chain to get - I've had a look on wiggle, and it seems chains come in three different widths - 7/8 speed, 9 speed and 10 speed. I'd say at a guess that a singe sped wold use the 7/8 speed type chain as it is the widest, but if I measure the width of the chain is there a way to tell what sort I need?
And secondly, what tools do I need to replace the chain? presumably there is something particular for breaking the chain apart and putting it back together again?
Thanks a lot for your help,
Ben

there is also chain for bikes that do not need to change gear.
get a SRAM PC-1 Nickel Singlespeed Chain and a chain tool. Have a read of the how tools on park tools for more infos."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
