Hi,
I am upgrading my GT hardtail bit by bit, time for the wheels.
Merlin are doing 2007 XT hubs, DT 4.2 rims and DT black spokes for £125.
The majority of my time is spent riding XC, can I better those wheels for £125.
Note £125 is at the pretty much bang on my budget limit. Would I be better going for deore hubs and some better rims?
All comments appreciated.

I dont know if they are much better but i'm running a pair of mavic crossride wheels and they are really good.
Cheap £120 or less if you shop about, they look really nice and i've done about 700miles on mine and have not needed to touch them.
worth a look

Very good, i'd be tempted to go to 717 on 08 xt with dt DB ss spokes for £140, which is only a little bit more, they will last you pretty much indefinitely and are excellent budget wheels.0

I have a set of XT with 717 rims.Good, reliable, strong, wheelset, with easy to service hubs.Deore hubs are not that much heavier,if you are on a budget, but share the XTs toughness.DT 4.2 are similar qulaity and weight to the 717s.
Crossrides are definitely lighter though, ithan either if that`s your priority.2006 Giant XTC

Lighter is good, but I guess I will be sacrificing something???0

The merlin wheelbuilds are excellent though, very very strong. Go for xt over deore hubs as the sealing is better so they should last longer and require less maintenance.
The mavic wheels require some specialist tools if i'm not mistaken and getting spare parts can be a right pain.0 -
there is a special tool you need to true mavic wheel and its to hold the flat bladed spokes when you true them but its just a bit of platic with a slit in it .
I really do recomend them, fully sealed cartrage berrings, light , nice looking, strong and they won the wmtb wheel review 10/10 no less0 -

Some nipples need a funny key. Some blades need to be held.
Xt/717 are heavier, but for most riders I think I better wheel.0 -
I've got XT on 717s and XTR on DT4.2s, the latter from Merlin. They're both very nice wheelsets.
In your case, I'd go for the DT rims, just to be a bit different - everyone has XC717s!!0
