Hi,

My bike doesn't have the eyelets for a normal rear rack, but having seen these seat post style racks, like the topeak beam rack, I thought great.

Although I have a carbon seat post and I've read in CyclingPlus that you should consider changing your carbon seat post if your thinking of fitting this type of rack.

I doubt if I will be using this bike for long touring, but would like to have the option of some more carrying capacity.

What do you think?

Cheers,
Phil.

The more carrying capacity you put on your bike, the more of it you'll use. :P

I have one of the Topeak beam racks - I used it frequently on my road bike and it worked well however it needed to be done up very tight so as not to flex, and for that reason I certainly wouldn't consider using one with a carbon post.

There are 2 issues that would make me change out the carbon post:
    1. as stated above, overtightening can crush the post.
    2. carbon fibre components are designed to be very strong in specific directions and the force a rack mounted on a seat post would exert is not one of those directions.

I wouldnt but a seatpost rack on a carbon post for exactly the reasons Belv states. Would one of these and some p-clips on the bottom let you fit a regular rack?

I was thinking about putting P-clips on the frame to give me the eyelets, and probably then using those to lightly attach it to the seat post. The weight would be on the frame then.

I would probably go aluminium seatpost and a carradice SQR and saddlebag if it were my choice.
