Alternative Brake Pads for Avid Juicies?

As many UK bikers will know, today was exceptionally muddy, wet and windy. I have worn down 3/4 pads to the metal in just 1 ride (quite an achievement I think :D ).

I have some new (2008) Avid Juicy 5's on my bike and really like them. I was just about to order a new set of organic pads, but wondered whether there are any better options? It is important that they come with a spring as my rear spring has somehow become really mangled - I think a small stick got in there and wrecked it.

I look forward to your suggestions!

Did you bed the pads in properly? That is insane wear, perhaps switching to sintered/semi-sintered would help with the wear rate.

kool-stop sintered won the MBUK test recently
  • The pads were 2/3 months old so were definitely bedded in properly. As a result of their age they were worn a bit but not too bad. The conditions were a real nightmare lol.

I'll take a look at the kool-stop pads.
  • Where can I get the kool-stop KS-D270S pads from in the UK?

you might have to e-mail or phone up amba
  • Ok thanks.
What are the differences between sintered and organic pads? They are a roughly equal price and I can't find any 'reviews' anywhere.

    Any other alternate pad suggestions?

sintered last longer but have worse power, but deal with heat better.

organic have better power, but are destroyed by grit and can overheat more easily IIRC

    Interesting.

My pads have lasted most of last season, since i bought the bike, a rockhopper with avid 3's.

The pads need replacing, and they need bleading i think, anda rotor tweaking as its a bit off. Im going to take it in to the lbs for half a day

Would organic pads make a signifcant diffrence to stopping power? how long is not as long? And for riding xc (cannock, llangdela, cwmcarn etc) would over heating be a real issue?

Cheers, Daniel. Im fairly new to hydroulics.
