but mountainbike helmets do?

And if there's no need for them, why do so many riders wear caps underneath their helmets?

Just curious.

If the weather is slightly inclement, that's when riders wear a cap under the helmet.

Visors get in the way of vision, especially when you're low on the drops.

I often wear a cap under my helmet - particularly in spring summer to keep the insects out of my hair, or the muck when it's raining. When head-down you can flip the peak up, whereas a helmet visor obstructs the vision when down in the drops.

To make you buy two helmets, one for the road, one for the MTB?

I read somewhere that the visor is supposed to help against low hanging branches, ah well, I wear my road helmet when I go mtb'ing.

    Not always the case though......

Specialized's Works 2D , the Decibel, and the Giro Pneumo allhave visor options, in fact they come with them.as standard.
