Hi,

I'm after a ahead stem with a brake hanger for canti brakes, along the lines of these Mather beauties;

http://www.robinmathercycles.co.uk/trev ... ike12.html

or with a hanger brazed to the underside.

I have a 10cm spacer and can't fit a hanger on the steerer. I've thought of drilling a stem, but worry about compromising the strength of it. Any ideas?

I've drilled and tapped quill type stems which are a lot thinner than the one's in common use now. I would think stems on trikes where you have to steer are more highly stressed than a bike and it wasn't a problem. You only need a 4.2mm hole to tap it for a 5mm adjuster thread.

Don't quite follow that bit if the spacer is beneath the stem. Hangers are less than 10 (presumably not centimetres?).

I like the bars high, so have 10cm of steerer between the headset and the stem. I got a spacer made up for me - 10cm tall. Trouble is you can't fit a hanger.

OK that's what I wasn't sure about. I was thinking that with the up and down forces, particularly weight pressing down on the stem, that any hole along the top would be under a lot of stress. I do have a heavy old Thorn stem.

Can you not just cut down the spacer by the amount needed to fit a hanger?

Or am I missing something obvious?

Well there's not room at the top or bottom, you need it sandwiched between 2 spacers.

Cut the 10cm in two, and shorten each one a bit.

I didn't like to suggest that....

Yeah, I was just thinking that. Seems a shame, but it would do it.

BTW, how do I get this thing to stop emailing me updates?

I've got a hanger for a threaded headset back home in the shed but it's for 1 1/8" and looking at the pic, you want 1". Have a look on Ebay or in your LBS. The LBS might have a hanger kicking around for threaded headset that is no longer sold as most bikes these days are V-Brake, you might have to enlarge the hole slightly but only a few mins work with a file or dremmel type tool.

just something that is maybe irrelevant

    Probably coz its carbon.

I have a 1 1/8th steerer. I'd rather find a stem with a hole in it, but I guess cutting the spacer in half does solve the dilemma, easily. Thanks.

but I guess cutting the spacer in half does solve the dilemma,

    why cut it in half?
    I wouldn't
I'd cut of one end and place the hanger on top of the headset.
Gives a lot of bend to the cable.

Years ago Topeak produced a cable hanger/stop that fitted to the top of the forks in the hole for the reflector bracket.

FSA make a headset with built in brake hanger

    should be here; http://www.dotbike.com/ProductsP3675.aspx?A=3&TRACK=DPL

failing that - cut 10mm off the bottom and fit a brake hanger (most are around 10mm)

How about fitting some V-brakes on the front so that you don't need the hanger?

All the hangers I've come across seem to drop before clearing the top of the headset, so don't sit right.

Yes, I remember, worth looking around for one.

Yeah, trouble is I have mudguard clearance problems with Vs.

    Cheers.

Go with TERM1TE's suggestion and get some V's. Ive just swapped from XT canti's to XT V's and cannot believe the difference. Got mine off ebay for £38.00 second hand, front and back with levers, only had to buy some new cable inners (£4.00).

By the way got some retro XT cantis and levers for sale now :D
