Slowly getting fitter

We did a 100k brevet populaire today. It was actually 109k which, with riding to and from the start, meant we clocked a total of 128km (80 miles). The forecast was spot on - light winds, cloudy but fairly dry with rain developing in the evening.

That's the first audax I've ridden since 1991 when I blew up in a big way on the Frodsham 400 trying to qualify for PBP. It was just too soon after a big accident. I'm a bit slower but I managed 5.75 hours overall - Avice let me ride on my own and she was a bit slower.

Perhaps I may be fit enough to tackle the Tourmalet and (who knows?) the Ventoux in June ... but lets not get too excited - today's ride was in North Notts - hardly mountainous :)

Very well done - out of my league, now or ever! And North Notts is quite mountainous enough for me!

  • Geoff, my admiration at a task well done. I'm in a similar position but over 25 year gap. I'm currently working my way back up - 100k is still a way off.

    Well done.

I hasten to point out that the 5.75 hours was for the 109k not including riding to and from the start in Alfreton.

Thanks for the encouragement, folks. Knocked off another surprisingly chilly 78km today - the joys of retirement 8)

I bet most people my age (21) couldn't manage what you're doing Geoff.

nice one indeed there Geoff, I have been through Alfreton a few times on my trips from Nottingham to Chesterfield and always wonder if the entire of Derbyshire is uphill! So very impressive indeed there.

Well done Geoff. With appropriate gearing, I'm sure you'll be fine for the cols. I managed Ventoux last year with only commuting for training (with the invaluable assistance of a 30x28 low gear), so you're well ahead of me!
