shimono sora groupset
I am trying to purchase a shimano sora groupset for a commuter / hack bike . 8 speed double with clamp- on front derailler and square taper bottom braket .Most retailers seem to sell the components individually . Anyone have a suggestion as to where I could purchase a complete groupset ?

although you can get Tiagra for £200.... for the extra £50 I'd get that, sora has annoying buttons to shift down/up on the side and there is no way you can reach them from the drops.0 -
Ive got the sora brakeset on my winterbike. The shifters work fine but the brake calipers are crap. I'd agree and spend the extra 50 notes on a Tiagra.0

thanks for the suggestions re Tiagra over Sora .Think I'll go for that0

I've got Sora on one bike and Tiagra on another. I actually quite like the Sora shift buttons however it's very rare for me to ride on the drops so shifting from there isn't an issue.0 -
They do work. I've only ridden a friends bike with sora and noticed that from the drops it was impossible to reach. Tbh i thought the shifting as smooth as Tiagra.0

You can make quick gear changes from the drops using the Sora thumb shifter.
It not impossible; it just takes a technique of swinging your elbow in a bit.
I have small hands so the adjustable reach on Sora suits me well.0 -
Cycling urban myth #234 - 'you can't reach Sora shifters from the drops'.
I agree with dazza Yes you can.
I can do it, reaching upwards with my thumb, and I don't have enormously big hands.0 -

It entirely depends on the shape your drops. And with most drops you won't be able to.
The tips of my thumbs are over an inch away from the button, no way can I press the button from the drops.
My thumbs aren't too small either, and I can't reach the buttons.0 -
Me too, I've got largish hands and I can reach the Sora thumb lever with ease from the drops (even wearing thick gloves) by dropping my elbow a bit. It's even easier wearing track mitts. There's very little to dislike about Sora. It's a functional and durable groupset.0

Three of us at least can do it !
- why not try, instead of clenching your fist so tight round the drops that your knuckes go white, loosen your grip a bit - still keeping hold with your fingers - and magic ! you can reach.0 -

Don't you think I've tried, every which way to do it? I have. It's easier to just put my hands on the hoods to change gear, while keeping my other hand on the drops.0 -
When I had sora on my old winter bike I could reach the button easily from the drops , I think it could be down to the positioning of the levers on the bars . If they're high up (as a lot of Shimano users tend to have them) this will make the button harder to reach .Luke0
