Hi,

Can anyone point me in the direction of somewhere that sells a decent pressure guage for presta valves? It doesn't seem to be something many many (any?) bike shops sell!

Cheers,
Steve

You mean for checking tyre pressures?

Most petrol stations sell them for a few quid with any fuel purchase.

    Or try eBay

I bought one of these http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=8504 few weeks ago and it is very good. Oxford DigiGauge Digital Pressure Gauge.
Digital, easy to use, Schraeder or Presta and £15. As it's both types, it works on your fork as well as tyres.

  • ditto for the type that CJW has, got the same one, a good investment and the usual CRC quick service. I think if you try and find one in an LBS you will try forever!

    Cheers guys,

I've only seen pressure guages for schrader valves for car tires in the petrol station.

Anyway, I'll go with the guage from Chain Reaction cycles - I thought it would be a standard thing that any bike shop would sell!

    Steve,

Quick tip for when you get it....

The valve adjust from presta / schrad is by moving a little plastic 'piece' inside the head (automatically happens when you put it on the valve). When I first used the gauge it didn't seem to work on Presta but worked fine on shraeders. Didn't understand why. When I notice the moving bit inside I pushed it with a pen top back and forward a few times to loosen it up. Then all was fine.

Just incase you get it and think it doesn't work....

Ok, so I got the guage about 10 days ago, and I have just been trying to use it on Presta valves...and I can't get it to work.

It seems that the valve stem is too thick to go far enough into the guage to register a reading. I can see a small plastic piece inside the head, almost like on 'O' ring that seems to move. There is also a central piece of plastic inside the 'O' ring, which I imagine is to press down on the valve to release air or take a reading.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, or if this is the same problem that cjw had. Anyone got any ideas?

    Cheers,
    Steve

Just use a phillips type screwdriver (or something similar) and push the plastic valve further into the head. You should find it will move backwards and forwards depending on the valve. On the presta type, the valve will completely go into the head once the plastic thing is free to move.

Cool, got it sorted! I just wasn't pushing hard enough on the plastic valve.

    Working a treat now. :D
