Hi, following my last question regarding bikes for my mate, he has found what he thinks is a reasonable deal for the Kona King Kikapu, http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=20817

Do you think this is a reasonable bike for his money or are there better bikes out there for similar money?

Thanks in advance

Owen

Make sure he rings to check they really have got 1 in stock before ordering  I ordered a 16" on Monday got a call yesterday to say "sorry" we haven't actually got any!!!!! GRRRRRR.....

And, before I get flamed, yes I know this is probably a one off and they are normally a very good company to use
  • Friend bought one from Chain, the bike is amazing, I took it out trail riding last saturday, the hayes brakes are great, the bike feels really solid - putting it together out of the box may be a little tricky if you're not too mechanically minded, but the bike's a peach & good value too. 8)

Didn't Tenacious D sing a song about a town called Kikapu?
  • Considering it was £1500 just a few months ago it's certainly a big saving.
Bestest bestest price I've seen them for is £839 so the price looks good.
Can't help you with the ride I'm afraid.
  • Might like to try Pauls cycles they often have last years konas at great prices!

They spell it better though :p

    Kickapoo
  • Yeah seen them at Pauls cycles £30 pound more expensive though for £829.95 still seems a great deal, I would get one myself if I had the cash!
  • I fancied the kikapu deluxe but supersonic advised against cos it was heavy and poor components but i dunno about this one, i was going to buy a ht instead, either the focus killer bee or the merlin malt 4 2008. unsure now. will this be a heavy bike as well? i see the components are better etc. dunno if it would be any good for commuting the 4/5 miles to work.

    pedal like you stole something!!!
  • You would certainly get a good hard tail for £800 and for commuting it would make a lot of sense!

    From the Kona site:

    Kikapu Deluxe = 30.6lbs
    King Kikapu = 29.6lbs
    The King = 26.3 lbs
  • weel my mate who i'd do most my biking with has a full susser so maybe he got put it places i couldnt etc, do you think it would make much difference on the road? all builds muscle i suppose which helps considering i'm a roadie. not that i've been on a bike for ages.

I know components on Kona's are not great but is this still valid on a bike that is just over £800? I don't believe it is that heavy especially considering the discounted price.

I would say it is poor value at it's original price but I imagine you are getting a pretty good frame.

I would be interested to hear what the experts think are better value FS bikes in this price range.
