poor braking

I know this isnt a race topic, but my braking is seriously, dangerously crap.
I have `04 chorus brakes, but they dont stop those "oh s**t, I`m going to crash...." moments. I`m 14stone in weight (6`3"), which doesnt help. Mavic still makes ceramic coated rims (open pro), so I guess I`ll have to buy one of them.
Why havent small, mechanical disc brakes been introduced to the front of road bikes - after all, its possible to do 70mph down an alpine pass!

use softer bake pads (salmon koolstop) and check that your brake cables run in a smooth line without big bends.

As I understand it the limitations on braking with regards to road bikes are more to do with the tyres than the brakes - normal road bike brakes are quite capable of locking up your wheels and having disc brakes will lock them up easier but not slow you down any faster.
If you're having "I'm gonna crash moments" try to plan your braking further in advance by being aware of what's coming up and anticipating when you need to brake. Brake well in advance of corners, apply power to the brakes in a smooth fashion rather than grabbing them suddenly. Try not to be braking when you're actually in the corner.
Its actually faster to come into a corner slightly slower but able to maintain that speed smoothly through the corner rather than coming in too hot and having to jam on brakes and then accelerating out of the corner again.

    Koolstops - Salmon.
Much better than anything else I've tried, especially when wet (like today!!!!!!)

Got to say the brakes on my best bike, Shimano Dura Ace, are just that "Ace". They are very progresssive and powerful. Have some cheap brakes on my winter bike and they are just OK. I guess you get what you pay for.

Chorus brakes are good - we can argue about Shimano vs Campag but I don't think there's any question that towards the top of the range it's not a question of equipment it's either set up, maintenance or use.

it's a hard life if you don't weaken.
