Hope 20mm and Maxle question

Excuse my ignorance but I have never used 20mm hub and Maxle before. I have put the hope hub pro11 between the legs of my pike 454 and expected some form of connection between the ends of the hub and the fork before the maxle goes through. What is the score? There seems no solid connection at all untill the maxle goes through! Is this normal or am I missing something
