Alternative to Royal Mail

Is there a viable alternative for non-business users?

I don't send or receive that much stuff by Royal Mail in the way of parcels, but in the last 12 months they have:

- lost 2 Recorded Delivery items I've sent.
- lost 2 Recorded Delivery that have been sent to me.
- burned a hole through the packaging and into the fabric of a new jacket that was sent to me by Special Delivery.
- torn the packaging of other items in a way that makes it look like somebody was taking a peak at the contents.

It annoys me that you have to pay a disproportionate amount to insure your parcel against them losing, stealing or damaging it too.

I use Royal Mail quite a lot and I've found the service generally quite good. I buy quite a lot on mail order both for cycle stuff and for model aircraft. I've also posted things all over the world I've sold on eBay. It's tempting fate I suppose but, so far, nothing's either gone astray or been damaged.

I wonder if it's a problem at your local sorting office. Have you contacted them to complain?

I prefer to receive stuff via RM because if I'm not in it's only 2 or 3 miles to the parcel depot to pick it up and I can usually get it on my bike. You can use any of the usual carriers (Business Post, DHL etc) but they're not a cheap option in my experience. For me they're less convenient as well as the bases are all about 10 miles away in Derby.
