Mornin all :D .
Ok bloke in work wants two bikes from halfords through the cycle to work scheme for around 400 quid each. One for him one for his son for an hour or twos general exercise a couple o days a week.
So i've been lookin on the hellfrauds site and found this:
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... yrn_82394#

Which looks ok for the cash but unsure how well the frame will cope with their weight, so then i found this:
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... ryrn_82394

And i know that kona frames are tough, but then i found this:
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... ryrn_82394

The spec look ok on all of them but i suppose the question is,although they wont be doin any serious offroading, what do you think? Should i steer them more towards a city/comutter to get a better spec for the money?
I mean for 400 quid i'd tell em to get a bmx and go down the local skate park  but wanna be as helpful as i can. Don't want them to end up with a doozer of a bike then think 'huh he don't know nothin' :o So thats were you guys come in as i'm not that confident on makin the decision for them and would appreciate the help :) .
Cheers in advance for readin, although some of you might of nodded off
Thanks,
Scott

Forget the Kona, the spec level is crap, crap forks, crap gears....

The Carrera or the GT are the better specced bikes by far.

Get down to halfords with the bloke in question to see them in the flesh/ have a little test.

PS Did I say how crap the Kona was.... ;)

So that kona sounds quite good then?
    Cheers chaps :D
Told him to go down and have a blast on a few bikes to see what they feel like and will point him in the direction of the gt or carrera. Many thanks again andy and sonic :)
    Scott.

  • Kona can't really compete with the buying power of the big guns because they're a smaller company, but I'd take any RS fork over a SR.
Seems like it's just me though.
I'd rather upgrade the bits rather than the fork, and although the dart isn't brilliant i'd prefer it to a SR.
SS enlightened me on certain SR models the other day (and no doubt will again :lol:) but I'd take the dart.

He he thats what i was thinkin 'ooooo Rs forks' lookin at the spec for the kona, but didn't really check out the rest o the spec  . As mentioned in a different thread i need my eyes testin :o:lol: .
Anyway this guy prob wont listen to me anyway and come into work on monday with a ruddy shockwave or sommat  .
Was in a similar situation a couple o weeks ago with a different lad in work who wanted to spend 300 quid on a commuter. So i said if its only for comin to work on then go for a rigid fork hardtail to get the most for your money............. turns up monday mornin with a double biongin diamondback for 175 quid  does the job i suppose though!
Rant over i need some sleep now, have a pleasant weekend all :D

The problem with the Dart 1 is a complete lack of any damping - its just a spring in a tube, and pogos about. Also it isnt even made by RS, just badged as one. Very heavy too. Really is a bad fork.

I remember the days when the fire mountain was steel and a respectable bike to own... what a laughing stock it's become!
