My bearings need replacing is this a job i can do my self or is it best to get lbs to do it?

Am guessing its just a case of knock the old ones out but are they quite difficult to get out?

My bike is a specilized epic 05

Thanks

You mean suspension bushings or other bearings - wheel, headset etc?
  • Suspension bearings for the back triangle

    Cheers

You can do the shock mounts yourself, and they should come out without too much persuasion. If they are sticky, try a tap with a rubber hammer or use a piece of dowel to knock them out, but be very careful as lateral force on the shock can distort the body and screw the seals and action. A bit of plusgas or GT left overnight will do wonders too. Having said all that, thay are normally fine.

You will need to replace the bushings (they are sacrificial and wear out so the shock mounts and frame don't) and it will be worth getting the shock serviced too. That's not too difficult but you need the parts kit to do it - it's entirely respectable to allow a competent LBS to do this, or return to Mojo in Newport if its a Fox. If the latter it will come back as good as new, gleaming with new decals.

Use assembly compound on the bushings when you reinstall.

The pivots can be a little trickier, mainly because they are a pig to get to on FSR designs, but it's an eminently achievable job at home. You'll probably have to take the chainset off. I believe you have bearings rather than bushings on the main pivot - it's simply a case of buying a new one or (very carefully) removing the dust seal with a stanley knife blade and cleaning out and regreasing. You'll need the rubber hammer again or a bearing press or G clamp and a couple of bits of wood to put it back together
