Can anyone help me because I am struggling.

I got into riding to help me lose weight and I am absolutely loving it, so I am looking to invest in some decent clobber but I am struggling to find gear to fit my large frame. I am 6ft 5in tall and just on the wrong side of 20 stone.

Does anyone know where I can get some gear that might fit me, at the minute my rides are often hampered by uncomfortable clothing

    Hey mate
I posted a question a day or so ago asking the same thing, Im 6'3" and about 18st so I know how you feel! Ive been using a pair of altura altitude baggy shorts in an XXL and although not perfect, they do me for now. Ive also used a pair of the Altura winter warmers legging style, when its so cold I dont worry about looks! lol

Ive been struggling too, I use Helly Hansen Versa Tee tops which are great, long and short sleeved, not too tight, so look good.

Again an Altura jacket does me, but North Face do some excellent waterproofs /windproofs in XXL which I own also. Im still looking for a good replacement for my baggy shorts tho!

    Hello there

I too am a fairly ample chap, 6ft and 16.5st in summer when fighting fit and more like 17.5st when wearing my post xmas 'winter coat' not quite as heavy as you but a bit shorter so maybe a similar build.

I wouldn't go spending shed loads on bike specific gear if you intend on getting fit and losing a significant amount of weight, or you'll just end up having to buy it all again in smaller sizes. As said above, get yourself a couple of wicking base layer tees, the HH mentioned above are good and come in big sizes. I'm lucky that i can just fit nicely into a pair of xxl humvee shorts, but if your bigger than a 38/39 waist then they'll be no good. A good idea maybe a padded boxer short such as the endura coolmax ones, these are only £15 and go up to a 42" waist i think, have a look on wiggle, you can then wear these under any old pair of non-cycling shorts or 3/4's that fit you.

Wheelbuckler, I'm 6'4" and, about the same weight as you by the sounds of it.

I have a pair of dhb Earnley lycra shorts which I wear underneath normal shorts as I'm perfectly sure London isn't quite ready to see me in full lycra glory anytime soon. They go up to 3XL (47" waist according to the sizing table) and they're pretty comfy I think.

Available from Wiggle, here's the link:

On top I wear a T-shirt and if needed then I also wear my fairly lightweight North Face jacket (XXL - not cheap but North Face is usually worth the money). If it's brass monkey's then I'll have a cotton hoody between the T-shirt and North Face and probably gloves, a scarf and a Carhartt beanie underneath the helmet. It looks stupid but keeps me warm. I figure I'm never going to look particularly cool on a bike being the size I am so practicality wins over looks.

I'm currently looking around to see if I can get some bib shorts or bib tights to stop the annoying roll-down effect. It seems that manufacturer's sizing can vary a fair bit. I know dhb's 3XL stuff fits me but other people's 3XL stuff isn't the same.

    Ho hum.
  • I'm 6'2" and about 17 and a half stone, I find Gore XXL shorts a good fit, but again they are not cheap, the altura one whilst cheap don't last very long in my opinion.
