Of course, it's not as simple as just throwing money at a sport. You need talented athletes in the first place.

That said, Lottery funding of track cycling has paid back in heaps with results (last year World Champs being a case in point). Basically, British Cycling copied the Australian Institute for Sport blueprint. And all this with just 2 year-round Olympic standard cycling facilities for 60 million people.

From what I remember, swimming was a big disappointment for the UK at Athens 2004 and they had their lottery funding cut accordingly. Yet there are many more times kids involved in competitive swimming than ever there are at cycling.

    i was being ironic

i agree we should do really well in track cycling which is great.

but we'll get hosed in track and field which is overwhelmingly what the olympics means for most people

This link shows the medal tables for Athens 2004 - 30 medals for the UK

Cycling, Rowing and sailing account for the majority.

The track athletic folk have an abundance of permanent site facilities - and competitors reap huge financial rewards from competing in the athletic rounds.

One really has to wonder what British Athletics are doing to improve results.
