SPD un-clipping

I have just put some SPD pedals on my MTB (PD-M505) using a SM-SH51 Cleat.
Though I am having a slight problem and unsure where the fault is.
My right foot is okay when a twist out of the pedal, however my left foot seems very loose.
Everytime I twist my foot to release nothing happens, I have to unclip my right foot first then angle (lean) my bike then twist out of my left foot.
I am unsure weather I have to tighten or loosen the the tension in the pedal, is the spring a bit tight or is it the cleat position.
It feels very loose when I move my foot side to side while clipped in.
Any advice would be useful, I use SPD-SL on my road bike and seem to have no problem unclipping from this type.
thanks

Sounds like the tension is too high, back off the tension completely (there is often a plus and minus sign on the pedal next to the grub screw indicating direction to turn) try unclipping, tighten the screw half a turn and try again until you're happy with the release action.
If it still feels funny when you've backed the tension right off at least you know it's not the pedal, check tightness of the cleat bolts and also make sure the tread on the shoe isn't fouling on the pedal when trying to release, compare the cleat positions with the right shoe.
I found it a bit of a shock unclipping when I put new cleats on my shoes, had the tension wound up for my old cleats, I had no idea how worn they were until I clipped in infront of a group of new riding buddies and nearly fell off in the carpark  .It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.
I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result0 -
after using flats for ages, i was nagged into using spd pedals, I tried them loose, tight, moving cleats etc, but never managed to unclip gracefully and consistantly. gave the pedals to a mate in the end, but thought stick at it and brought some crank bros eggbeaters. what a difference, perfect in and out every time, without thinking.0

Thanks for the reply's
I will tweak and adjust further, if that don't release my left foot. Then I will give them away and pick up some eggbeaters.
Thanks again0
