Just got a nice new carbon seat post for the velocipede. Quick q: Do these need greasing before installation in the same way as alloy posts?

    One word... No...

    Interesting post here:

Carbon seatpost, to grease or not to grease

I don't read that Post as an unequivocal "no"! Rather, that it depends on frame material and precise nature of the "grease". May well be simple prejudice, but I don't like the thought of bare, dry, matings (yes, yes!!). In the early days of carbon posts, a slight smear of olive oil was recommended by some - I have used that without problems.

Use Tacx Carbon Assembly Compound or similar. Not only forms a corrosion barrier but prevents the post from slipping and allows the clamp to be tightened with a lighter torque.

If the post is going in an aluminium frame, be aware that if you don't remove the post every now and then it can end up being permanently attached as the aluminium corrodes as it gets sprayed during the year.

I don't use any grease on my carbon post in a scandium frame, and was quite surprised at how tight it attaches itself-I now remove, clean and replace regularly-cheaper than a new post.
