Getting back to it!

I'm trying to get back into riding after some abdominal surgery (appendics and part of both bowels removed) and doctors aren't too helpful just saying do what you can!

Just wondering if anyone has any advice or tips?

Chris

WB! I would keep pushing the docs, or contact the surgeon. I should imagine you have some pretty big scars if the surgey was open!

Need more input (Johnny five is alive).

How old, when did you have surgery, open appendix, mini-laparotomy, laparascopic? What findings on the removed bits?

Need more input, need more input.

(No, just me that remembers that then?)

    Blimey - major surgery then?!

I'm not doc but know you use your abdominals a lot in cycling for stability.
    Maybe ask a sports physio?

I know one and will see what she says.

  • I'll apologise if any of the spelling is wrong.

Just over 6 weeks ago I went in for a laproscopic appendectomy which after they went in was converted to an open right limited hemicolectomy, which is a bit of a shock when you come round to see 28 staples in your stomach! Then the problems started and for the last 5 weeks an inch and a half of the scar has been open, infected and has been packed every other day. THough the infection has gone now.

I've managed little rides but i've so many differing stories i'm just a bit confused at the moment.
    Oh and i'm 27.

To be honest I wouldn't be up to anything much until the wound was fully healed. You probably wouldn't do anything to it cycling but if you fell off you could cause all sorts of grief. If you don't mind me asking, why did they end up converting it to a right hemi??

Oh and for a better answer I would speak to the surgeon directly, outlining exactly what you mean by 'cycling', he did the surgery and knows the in(sides) and outs of it and should eb able to give you the definitive answer. Anyone elses is probably just best guess TBH. Write him a letter, via his secretary and he should reply....

  • I've been told that my symptoms didn't point to my appendics having burst. So they went in laproscopic and couldn't find the base, when he found it, it had burst/ruptered and twisted around my bowel! They think it had gone for about a week(I thought it was a dodgy curry!) and as a result they cut me open and found a had perritinitus and there was an abcess, so cut me a little bit more! Thankfully it was all down to the appendics and there was nothing sinister in there. It was all a bit of a shock really, especially when everyone keeps saying i should have really poorly.
