Insurance Pay Out - Buy From Halfords

Hi Guys,
I'm a newbie on here and would firstly like to say hello!
I have owned a Marin Hardtail bike for about 12 years now, and last month some thieving toerag stole both my daughters MTB and my Marin from out of my shed. I wouldn't mind but I had God knows how many locks on the door and they were bolted to the shed itself with one of those chain loops, and a 4.5 metres cable as well. All they did was rip the back of my shed off, and take both bikes still chained together, I mean what more can you do to stop them stealing them!
Anway, we had the insurance guys out this morning, who will send me the cheque to reimburse me for my daughter bike (I had to replace hers straight away, 9 year old dont understand waiting for the insurance pay out!!!), but also he said that Halford will be contacting me to discuss replacing my bike.
I have told the insurance that my frame was worth £800 alone, as back in the day, my pal built my bike for me, and it was built to a good spec, so i told them it was probably worth around £1000ish, I have no idea how much it was really worth, I mean it was 12 years ago!
Therefore, I was wondering if anyone could give me some advise on a new bike. It looks like I will have about £1000 to spend, but at Halfords. I would look at another Hardtail, not keen on Full Suspension, so has anyone got any ideas?
Cheers guys, and sorry for waffling on!
Steve

Will they only allow you to use Halfords for the replacement bike?
I'm sure i've heard of people using Halfords under the RideToWork scheme to order different makes in, if this is true, could they not just do that?
Were your bikes in a wooden shed? Who were you insured with? I'd like to insure my new bike when i get it, but was under the impression that most companies dont usually cover bikes kept in a wooden shed0 -
Halfords will buy from Leisure Lakes and resell, but most manufacturers wont give you a manufacturer's warranty if you go down that route.0

Hi Sikora,
Yes my bikes were in a wooden shed.
I am insured with Morethan, and they were covered on my house insurance. I also had the extra cover for when we went out on our bikes and they got pinched.
Great insurance cover, go online and do it, massive discounts!
Unfortunately, it looks like I have got to go through Halfords. The insurance guy said, that Halfords would contact me direct, so I don't have much choice.0 -

Would Halfords not honour the Warranty if thats the case? Seems stupid how a company can worm their way out of a warranty like that.0 -
They did when I worked there - I did a few of these insurance 'order in' things. Halfords will honour the guarantee and absorb the cost.
But do look and test some of the Halfords bikes - Boardman Pro got 10/10 in MBR.0 -
Thanks Supersonic.
I had seen the review of that Boardman bike, and my next question was going to be, if anyone had actually test driven one, or in fact bought one, and what they thought.
Has anyone got a Boardman Pro?0 -
I think someone here has!
Also Carrea Titan (carbon frame) for 1k.0 -
If it was a custom bike then you can ask for a cheque and get a bike elsewhere if required.
They will prefer you to go to Halfords as it works out cheaper for them - but it doesn't mean you have to accept their offer.
Also what was your bike actually insured for? If you dodn't specify an amount on your insurance then you may have a limit imposed upon it.
We sell house insurance and unspecified bikes are only covered for £300 with a £75 excess. If you want to insure a more expensive bike then you need to pay more on the insurance to cover it.
I hope you don't lose out on this...0 -
However, If you do want a Boardman Pro - well it's a cracking bike. It's actually reviewed in this month's MBR and got a 10/10.
A friend has one as well - and you couldn't get the components without the frame for the same price.0
