Campag B/B Service Question
Hi,
I think I need to service (re-grease) the bearings of my Ultra Torque (hollow) Campag. bottom bracket.
What tools do I need?
e.g. Some sort of extended allen key to connect my torque wrench to the centre of the b/b "axle" bolt and a tool to remove the shells?
Do I need to replace the wavy washer before reassembly?
Do I simply:
1. Remove retaining pin
2. Remove bolt
Then do the bearings slide out, or do I need to also remove the outer cups/shells?

I not sure that the bearings are easy to maintain, especially without the correct tools. A failing of UT unfortunately.
To get the cranks off you need a long 10mm allen key. Campag do an adapter to fit on the end of a 10mm Torque wrench bit.

To remove the cups you need something like this:

If you don't have paper copies of the Campag UT instructions, I'd suggest getting some off their website.0 -

To regrease the bearings I removed right and left arms and then used a grease gun to press grease into the bearings from the inside .
fill the cups with grease and put it all together again.
After first ride a lot of grease came out behind the crank arms.
clean that away and I dare say you have regreased your crank
very easy.0 -
I second RD's comments, with the right tools mucking around with your Ultra Torque, will be a piece of wee-wee.
I've not looked at the links but I assume they are for UT-BB110 and UT-BB130, which is all I needed to completely remove the entire set.
Check out my 'wiggle-beat this' thread, in cake stop, for quality of service.0 -

Me neither, I just answered his question.JWSurrey wrote:...and a tool to remove the shells?0 -
Excellent - Thanks for all the info.!
So the wavy washer doesn't need replacing...
and it sounds like there's not much point removing the bearings as they're cartridges that can't be easily removed or taken apart and cleaned?
I'll give them a mechanical clean in-situ then chuck in a load of lithium grease.
Sounds like most people don't regrease their b/b, or is it simply cheaper to replace the cartridges?0 -
At this point in time not much point in replacing the bearings.
Maybe in the future - who knows.
No need to replace anything. Just put it all back the same way it came out.
And tighten the bolt with a torque wrench.0 -
Just spoke with the LBS, and Campag. don't make a bearing puller, so to get them out is custom rebuild of a Jo Bloggs bearing puller! Sounds like too much hard work - re-grease it is!0

Yeah, agreed - Sounds like they're cartridge type in any case, so couldn't be very easily cleaned up.
Any tips on which bearing pullers can be used without modification? I guess if the bearing puller they finally make is as expensive as their chain tool and corkscrew, then it's not economic in any case!0 -
Main criteria seems to be it needs to have very narrow tips to the end of the jaws to fit in the available space between the bearing and the crank.
You can generally pull the covers off cartridges and squirt new grease in - IIRC the side which is exposed when you pull the cranks off doesn't have a seal anyway.0 -
I'm probably beyond my knowledge now, so I'll just tell you what I did.
Wifey brought me an all singing and dancing Bianchi carbon crank set for my birthday, purely for the bling fact. (and by jimminy was I pleased).
Anyway I was left with having to remove my Veloce Ultra Torque crank set.
Checking out the spec pages on www.campagnolo.com I brought UT-BB110. from a company in N.Ireland, (£10) and UT BB130 (£12) from wiggle.
That was all I needed to completely remove my Veloce crank set, and cups, so I could then replace with my bling and an ISIS bottom bracket.
Both jobs were very easy, because of the campag spec page and the video maintenance on here.0
