Unless Sky isn't actually over egging it like it normally does: -
The worst storm of the winter is on track to batter Britain tonight, causing traffic chaos and coastal flooding.
Residents are being advised to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary journeys.

Well, soon find out when I go to the shed to get me bike tomorrow at 6am, if the shed is still there.
I might get to tell one of my favourite jokes as a real story: -
'Did your shed get damaged in the storm?'
'Dunno, haven't found it yet...'

Tomorrow around midday looks nasty....just as well I'm not bobbing around in the Western Approaches :0)0 -
Just had another look...and it seems that with Westerlies I'll be able to get to work no problem.
Stopping could be a bit tricky, as could getting home again...but I think Thursday looks like it might be calm enough to return!! :roll:0 -
I went out today to get my endorphins so I can resort to the car without getting too grumpy !!!!

Anybody know a supplier of sails for bikes?

Well it wasn't so bad on my way in at 05.30, but it's got much worse in the last hour and a half since i've been at work.

Considering this thread:
"Taking spare pair of inner shorts for return leg"
and this reply:prj45 wrote:I do a single pair of shorts and what's more I only wash them about every four weeks (uuurrch!). I do 22 miles a day.
Are days like today how they get washed?0 -
had some nasty sidewinds on my way in took an even stronger primary and spent more time in primary than normal today. No rain fortunately, but I reckon Im in for a big soaking on the way home...0

I did an excellent CX/MTB ride with one of my mates yesterday, great ride, sort that makes you just glad you have a bike.
So enthused was I by the excellent ride, I was stupid enough to cycle to the office this morning, very stupid. At one point I was doing no more than walking pace, on the lowest gear I have, head on into a gale. The XC section of my route is a fireroad open to the elements, it was wet and muddy, and a couple of times, I thought I was going to be on my @r$e as cross winds were pushing me sideways on very wet and muddy trails.
Thankfully a nice warm office, and nice warm clothes to change into0 -
It was a bit wet and windy here, but I've seen worse. However I was presented with yet another example of why you shouldn't ride in the gutter on the way in this morning. A guy on a mountain bike was riding along in front of me, we both got hit by a sudden gusting side wind. I went left a bit, but he was riding nearer the curb, so he hit the curb and toppled off his bike. I had to swerve so I didn't hit him. I stopped to make sure he was ok. Once he'd dusted himself down he said he was fine, so we both went our separate ways.0

Little wind, very little rain...
The media is the root of all evil...0 -
It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be - but I'm in Birmingham and not on the coast. There was a great deal of water on the road tho' and I'd like to thank the car drivers out there who endeavoured to make today's difficult journey damn near impossible with their petty, vindictive attitude to cyclists.Crash 'n Burn, Peel 'n Chew

Apparantly my neck of the woods set the record for highest wind speeds 82 mph
http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/news/arti ... article.do
"The highest recorded wind speed so far is 82mph in Berry Head, Brixham, south Devon" ITs certainly howling out there again at the moment.0 -
significantly fewer bikes on the streets of London I thought.
I did come round the corner of St Pauls and get hit by a head-on gust that nearly stopped me dead in my tracks; but otherwise not too bad just got a bit damp.road0 -
The wind in Edinburgh always seem to be in your face
I thought there were far fewer bikes on the road this mornign and lots more cars, which made my journey seem like i was flying through all the traffic
A bit windy, but then...Whenever I see an adult on a bicycle, I believe in the future of the human race.

I'm an Edinburgh(ish) commuter who bottled out of taking the bike this morning. Not 'cause of the wind though (which didn't seem that bad) but because when I looked out of my window (I live in Balerno) at 6:30am this morning it was snowing...0

The storm was never forecast to affect the Midlands! The Midlands is basically under the centre of the low, where there is very little wind. The storm was forecast to affect southern coastal regions, and it has.
No doubt lots of people in the Midlands will be thinking "what a useless forecast, there's barely a breeze!" when the problem is the media misreporting the forecast because "Storms batter Britain" makes a more exciting bulletin than "Storms hit south coast". :?
It was still windy down here but the sun came out a quarter of the way through my journey, so apart from wet feet I got off pretty lightly!0 -

Gave the bike a miss this morning. It really was grim knowing that I'd have to catch the train and tube. Supposed to be a bit hairy on Wednesday too.FCN 2-4.

Surely the 'centre of the low' was also travelling from west to east?
Metoffice warnings were over Brum yesterday, it's still got 'very windy' in the first line of the ongoing forecast.0
