I was wondering if someone could help me, I am looking to purchase a mountain bike spending approx £500 ish. I would like a lightish bike which will be used both on and off road and well geared for up and down hills, I have been recommended the following couple of bikes but i keep getting mixed reviews what would your recommendation be please

GT Avalanche 1.0 Disc
GIANT XTC 2.5 (2007)

If there are any other bikes other then these above which you would recommend please let me know.

Regards

David

Best thing you can do is go to a few bikes shops and see what offers they have one, and what bikes you feel the most comfortable on. Most should have demo bikes in , or let you ride one round the shop.
The GT Avalanche 1.0 Got excellent reviews in MBUK not long ago. Won the "Best bike for $500" hands down.
Oh, and the GT Agressor XC 1 in Halfords is the same bike if its easier for you to go there to try one

Rockhopper disc as its basically a Stumpjumper HT frame from 2006. Strong and light! Perfect for the long-term and very upgradeable!
    Specialized Rockhopper '07
    Trek Fuel EX8 '09
  • Merlin if you can strech the budget a bit, you can't go wrong.
