Middleburn chain line

Was thinking about upgrading my XT square taper to a Middleburn chain set when I realised that the Middleburn has a 48mm chainline compared with Shimano standard 50mm.
So the question is, do I need a new 117mm bottom bracket to compensate?
Anyone else had issues or problems doing this?

  • the 2mm will not make much difference unless you run the gears in unrecommended combos. other than that it will just mean a slight fettle with your front mech.

    Just an update here.
I fitted the Middleburn chainset and ran it with the standard 113mm bottom braket.
What a total mess! The shifting was a disaster even with a new front mech.
I got the same advice from other sources (LBS). I can only think that some riders will put up with really dodgy shifting.
I fitted a cheap VP 118mm bottom braket and hey preto. Perfect shifting.
    The set up, 46 36 24 rings with 11 to 32 cassette.
    Read and learn.
