Looking to commute for a couple of days between Fradley Park and Burton. I know the drive well, but want to ride it. I know there is a cycle path along the a38, but not sure how far this progressed towards Burton. Does anyone know per chance.

And, trying to answer this question for myself, I wondered what resources you guys use to plan these kind of routes. I am happy with road riding, but prefer non dual carriage ways like the A38 there!! I am currently using maps.google.co.uk to visibly see the cycle paths with sat view, but the scrolling is a pain for a 8 mile journey!!

  • When i was planning my commute i used www.multimap.com , go to the directions tab and choose the walking option, usually steers you away from main roads as much as possible.
  • Cheers, that looks good. Its actually suggested the same route as I did for 1/2 of the route, but missed the a38 cycle path. Definitely a good suggestion to use for starters.

especially good if you use the hybrid sattelite and street maps. will show distance and elevation.

The cycle route goes through Burton (You could follow it to Berwick upon Tweed!) but not much of it is along the A38. I wouldn't want to do it regularly, it's probably the most direct route, depending on where in Burton you're going, I just think there are nicer options. There's a section of muddy track south of Barton which can be avoided by staying on the A38 footpath to the next junction :? Or you could stay on the footpath all the way to Branston, I often see cyclists using it and I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone walking on it. It’s not quite unbroken, you’d have to use the A38 for a short section and it’s a nasty junction where you come off.

My preferred route would be to cross the A38 in Fradley, take the loop that brings you out on the A513 by the Arboretum. Turn right and take the next left, through Walten, past the old power station and into Burton through Stapenhill. I've never done this route at commute times, so you'll have to give it a go and make your own mind up. The problem with anything West of this is the only river crossing is the A38 or as far out of your way as Kings Bromley.

I use good old OS Landranger Maps for route planning, though now I have them on CD – Memory Map. I’ve never tried the online offerings.
