Tubelss rims and my old SLicks - are they compatable?!

Feeling a bit stupid here, bought a Mavic Cross land front wheel for commuter MTB and did';t even look at the tubeless thing - shows you how long ago it was I bought a MTB wheel!

So casually tried to put my old slick on it and... broke my tyre lever.

So figure there must be something I am missing, either:

I need to take out the plastic insert that makes is tubeless (I really don;t care about it)
I need a differently sized 'etero' tyre (WTF does that mean anyway?!)

Help, which one? And what's a good super-fast city 'etero' compatable tyre?

Thanks in advance...

I had the same problem with my mavic tubless ready rims, I was sold a bike with these but the tyres were just normal ones with an inner tube. Recently I bought a pair of semi slick tyres and tried to fit them but broke two tyre levers and ended up giving up!

the tyre will fit. and the tube will fit. but you will not need a rim tape.

    Yes it will be tight.

Ok, thanks guys. Sounds like it's THEORETICALLY possible but I might break a few tyre levers in the process. Or just give up. Maybe I'll just send the wheel back...
