Would you consider upgrading and loosing 6 kg in bike weight worthwhile?

Would you notice much difference?

6Kg is a hell of a lot. If I lost 6Kg off my bike it'd weigh only 1.5Kg.

I'm guessing your bike is about 15Kg? That's heavy, put it on a diet.

Fully equipped around 18 kg. I have front suspension plus heavy 38c Schwalbe M+ tyres

The bike minus tyres and other stuff is about 15.5 kg.

The bike i am planning on getting is around 9.5kg (without pedals) So once tyres 25c SM+/shimano MX30 pedals and lights/GPS/race blades are added should be no more than 12 kg.

I'm just trying to work out whether the £900 outlay would be worth it.
  • I'm with red. Any upgrade that looses 6kg off your bike or yourself is definiatly wirth the effort.

Nope. You can get a proper road bike that weighs 8kg for that much.

The bike itself is £600. The extra £300 is for the other items i need to buy. Clothes, tyres, pedals etc

I lost 7 kg over Christmas, no Santa didn't bring me any super light bike bling, pneumonia. When I recovered I thought the loss of almost 90% of my bike weight would see me flying along. No, felt like death after half a mile, put nearly all the weight back on now and almost back to pre-Christmas form.

Weight off the bike can only help, weight off rider needs to be in a slightly more controlled fashion!

Ride a fixed wheel [or single freewheel if you aint man enough] if you want a light bike.
Even a crappy old steel bike is happy with the gears removed. I am going out on my fixed Dolan [ cheapy one] on tomorrows club run, 60 miles on a 66 inch gear on a bike that weighs about 21 lbs ........... oh the bliss... who needs 10 speed and silly gear levers :D

some of my bikes have gears

Remember loosing weight can be dangerous! Make sure you set it free in a controlled environment!

Losing weight on the other hand...

But at 15lbs, yours is presumably made from silk and air!
