Hello I want to start doing some xc races but I don't know what to expect as all I ever hear about is the 12hour stuff.

So some questions;
Anyone raced in the southen xc? what is it like?
How long is a race?
what class should I go in? i'm 27 quite fit but not raced before

thanks

    This might help.

Race distances are typically 7-10 km per lap. This will vay on the type of course and weather conditions. the target time for the fastest Elite riders is 20 minutes per lap.

    Category Laps
    Elite Male 5
    Elite Female 4
    Expert Male 4
    Expert Female 3
    Master Male 4
    Master Female 3
    Sport Male 3
    Sport Female 2
    Veteran Male 3

So the fastest riders are averaging about 15mph

A bit more about the series over on XC Racer.
  • Southern XC is more of a sprint really, races generally last for 90 minutes, 30 minutes a lap. Totally different ball game to the 12 hour races. Great fun though, fast and furious and a bit more adrenalin than a 12 hour event.

I would say go for it :D

I did a race last year and sprint is the right word. It goes off fast and doesn't ease and that was just the Master's event.
