use some software to reduce the image.

it needs to fit both of the following
Displays a small graphic image below your details in posts. Only one image can be displayed at a time, its width can be no greater than 80 pixels, the height no greater than 80 pixels, and the file size no more than 10 KB.

    Assuming you are on Windows...

    Go to Programs... Accessories.....Paint

Select File and Open, open your image

    Now:
    1. Select "Image" on the toolbar
    2. From the dropdown select "Attributes
    3. This will tell you how many pixels your image is in dimension
    4. Do a rough calculation as to what percentage 80 is of the original size of the largest dimension rounding up to the next whole number
    (For instance my original = 2272...80/2272*100 = 3.52)
    5. Cancel the box and select "Image" as before followed by "Stretch / Skew"
    6. Enter the value you calculated in both boxes to maintain the image shape
    7. Select OK.
    8. Repeat step 1-3 and you should find the image is now a suitable size
    9. If still too large, Select "Edit" and Undo.
    10. Now round the number in 4 to the next lowest and repeat 5-8

When you are happy with the image size select "Save as" - DO NOT "SAVE" AS THIS WILL OVERWRITE THE ORIGINAL FILE

I am afraid this program only accepts whole numbers and is a rough tool but will do the job - you can reduce in "steps" do get a more accurate image, but to be quite honest the difference between 75 and 80 pixels in this kind of use is indistinguishable.

M$ Image resizer, part of Power Tools for XP via Google, Irfanview and others including M$ Paint. These will all reduce an image to suit avatar restrictions.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
