which do you like?
both have problems."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Budget full-sussers with lots of problem components in the spec sheet.
This budget really needs to be a hardtail...0 -
What size are you after?0
-
Spec wise the Trek is better0
-
these are £1000 pound bikes, how can they be so poor? zero i'm 5ft 7 and a half so prob size medium 18 inch ish0

The Kona has a horrible, undamped clunker of a fork, and single piston hydros, with the rest of the spec not up to par with a 500 quid hardtail. The Trek is better, but the fork varies - some are ok, others develop problems quickly. And without testing for size ;-) 18 might be too big.0

They are quite outdated £1000 full suss bikes which weren't that great spec wise back in 2006. They're going to both be rather heavy and not ride all that great.
Now, if you can find £1000 hardtail reduced to £500 - £600 you could be on to something nice!0 -
can a hardtail take as much abuse as a full susser? i'm a roadie so i dont know the answer to these "daft" questions0
-
Both of those are 4" travel bikes so they can't "take anymore" than a hardtail really, they'll be a bit more comfy but you'll be going more slowely due to weight (might be a good thing with the poor brakes) and the front forks will hinder as much as they help.
What's the budget btw, I'm assuming £500 - £600...0 -
yeah zero your bang on the budget if need be i can stretch it a little bit more, what about this hardtail?;- http://www.paulscycles.co.uk/products.p ... m1b1s2p6790

Mmm, a Zaskar - superb frame, and great kit, but very XC oriented - could be good if coming from a roadie base. But I do recommend trying one out first if you are unsure of what you are after, geometry varies a lot between models and brands - more so than with road bikes.0

If you want full suss, have you looked at the various Giant Trance options,at www.paulscycles.co.uk?
The 07 Trance 3 at £649,is a good buy.
Even the latest model,Trance 3 at the full rrp of £999,is pretty decent value. No real shortfalls in the spec, and would make a good basis for upgrading as and when funds allowed.2006 Giant XTC
2010 Giant Defy Advanced
2016 Boardman Pro 29er
2016 Pinnacle Lithium 4
2017 Canondale Supersix Evo0 -
I'm only concerned with looking concerned0

right guys i've decided to up the funds to around the £700 mark, had some money put away i forgot about, what about this
http://www.paulscycles.co.uk/products.p ... m1b0s1p549
or is there better bikes out there for the money? sorry to keep throwing loads of options in but i'm really confused. HELP!!!!0 -
Hmmmm, think of the hard tail you could get for £700: light, fast and it'd climb like a monkey.
and it'd have a decent set of forks. The forks on that Kona cost £75 on CRC. They may well be made of cheese.I'm only concerned with looking concerned0 -
That Kona is crap!0

I was trying to be polite but, er, what supersonic saysI'm only concerned with looking concerned0

ha ha ha ah well there you go, that shows how much i know about mtb's.0

if not can some recommend something please? Supersonic you seem the guy in the know and you've been very helpful on my buying problems, if you were in my shoes what would you spend the £5,6,700 on?0 -
Again, both are good bikes - limited size with the XTC though. Is a bargain for a carbon frame. You know me though, I'd get out and try some, the Trance and XTC are very different steeds. Do any local shops have sales on? Some good deals in Halfords, like the Boardman Comp, and GT aggressor XCR0
-
the only problems i've got supersonic is i live in sw scotland in a smallish town with 2 bike shops 1 being halfords and another a private co with not a great deal of stock. i live in Dumfries which is smack bang in the world famouse 7 stanes region so i would expect there should be more but there isnt for some reason, ah ha theres a money making plan!!!! open a shop!!!0

-
I'd have a look in the Halfords - some really good deals on.0

-
supersonic, do you think i should save a bit of cash, buy an avalanche 1.0 08 and spend the extra what evere on upgrading some bits that maybe you could suggest?0
