Apologies for my cynicism, but when I read of riders establishing fan clubs, I reach for the sick bucket.......why do professional cyclists do this?? Nauseating.... I'm assuming they authorise the fanclubs and help organise them. Could you see yourself setting up your own fanclub if you were famous? "Hey, I'm great.. let's meet up so everyone can tell me how great I am :D"

Do you not have a fan club Dave? I have one and I know that Iainf has two plus an unauthorised biography.

Not having a fan club is soooo 1980s

Fan clubs are usually the initiative of an avid fan or a longtime member of the rider's entourage. Of course, the riders go along with it. You have this group of people so devoted to following your exploits that they are card-bearing members of an official organization. You'd be a prick not to show up, no? Setting it up yourself is kind of lame, though. Akin to praising yourself on Wikipedia.

Better not tell the missus about this.
It's a little like wrestling a gorilla. You don't quit when you're tired. You quit when the gorilla is tired.
