I have an 07 Carrera Fury which I am trying to lighten up a bit,Ive replaced the bars, stem and seatpost already and have started to look at replacing the standard heavy-ish wheelset as I think this is where most of the excess weight is (other than the fork).

Any recommendation for a reasonably priced wheelset(£150ish),that is light but will take the mild abuse of the Rocky/Rooty sections of my local trailcentre(Cwmcarn) ??

Cheers

Mike

XT hubs on 717 rims (or 719 if you are heavy), handbuilt, with a pair of good light kevlar tyres with the change.

Cheers Sonic,I was looking at Mavics on the Merlin website earlier and was amazed at how cheap their wheel builds are.As soon as I get payed im ordering a set of 717 as im only 11 stone so weight is not an issue.

With a good choice of tyres, I reckon you will lose a pound from each wheel. Have a look at the Continental Speed King folding.

Thats a good weight saving for the cash ! I will look at Speed Kings as I currently have Conti Gravity tyres that came with the bike which aren't the best.

Ive been offered a set of Dt Swiss E540 wheels which I know are not the lightest around but I checked on the Bike radar review and the weight of the standard wheels with tyres on my Fury is :

    Front 2.3KG

    Rear 2.96KG

So I would still make a big weight saving with some lighter tyres thrown in.
Anyone got or used these E540 rims ?

Yoo burly for that bike IMHO - 540g for a rim, compared to about 400g for the 717.

Those spec wheels are very heavy on the fury. An XT hub on 717 is under 1000g - add a 550g tyre, 150g tube and 80g skewer and there is over a pound saving straight away.

I'd like to reinforce the importance of light tyres.

I got a set of 717s on XT hubs from Merlin and was intiially disappointed with them (partially due to coming from a set of Crossmax, admittedly).

But I've finally got round to switching the front tyre from a wire-beaded Velociraptor to a folding Nobby Nic - and it's made a vast difference.

Much lighter, faster and even easier to pop the front wheel over obstacles too.
