Sora Triple to compact

Hi, I currently run a Giant OCR3 with a sora triple ring. How do I change to a compact chainset, and is it worth going up a groupset?

Why do you want to change to a compact?

The weight saving will be negligible, you will lose gearing range, and cost over £100 (new shifters, chain, chainset, rear mech, front mech).

Agreed, I really wouldn't see any point in changing. If you _are_ determined to do it it would be worth going up a groupset (with Tiagra up you can shift from the drops.)

What is this 'with Sora you can't shift from the drops' stuff ?

I never had any problem and I don't have huge-size hands...
  • I would say go for it. I have a Giant SCR 2.0 which came with a triple. The groupset is Tiagra.

After a lot of deliberation and research into whether it would work I finall swapped the triple for a compact double the night before last.

All I had to change was the bottom bracket (bottom brackets for triples are wider) and crankset. Maybe you'll go for a fancy crankset with an integrated bottom bracket and you won't be worried about this though.

The Tiagra triple front derailleur and shifter can be set up for the compact double no problem. Just drop the front derailleur a couple of mils and re-calibrate its low and high stop positions.

I can't understand why someone above has suggested you'll need new shifters and a new rear derailleur. The reason I switched to the compact double was because I found myself main riding on the middle ring of the triple (42T), even on hills, but when the hills finally got too steep I was having to do a low-speed down-shift onto the granny ring (30T), which is not always pleasant if you've nearly ground to a halt. Perhaps bad technique on my part, however I reckon I'll have more useable gears with the compact, and will probably spend more time on the big ring (50T), shift down to the wee ring (36T on my crankset) for hills and be able to reach my lowest gear without any further shifting on the front.

The compact looks cooler than the triple too.

It's because Sora shifters come in triple or double flavours. If you have a Sora triple shifter, you need to replace it with one set for a double if you want to use a compact. IMHO, this would be a pointless expense, especially considering the heinous cost of STI shifters.

If the OP is dead set on a compact (which they should try before buying), a better option might be to just buy a complete Tiagra or 105 groupset and install that.
  • Apologies, I hadn't realised there were double and triple versions of Sora LHS Shifters. However, since the Tiagra triple works with a double, perhaps so would the Sora triple, I the there's only one way to find out though. Going from triple to double would on the other hand defintely require a new shifter.

Can you not use the triple shifters with a double (as you can with the other flavours of Shimano shifters which only come in triple version)?

The Sora triple shifters will work fine with a double chainset.
I did the same conversion on an SCR 3.0 a good while ago, I eventually changed to a double front mech as the triple Sora one would not shift nicely between chainrings not matter how much i adjusted it.
You do not need a new rear mech.

Sorry, to clarify, shifting up is easier with Tiagra up due to the lever running down the brake lever, rather than the thumb thing. Shifting down is the same. In my experience it was difficult to shift up in the drops with Sora; it was easier to move hand to the hoods to do it. I now have 105 levers which are easier.

I was thinking the other way around. I know you normally need new STIs and mechs when you go from double to triple - and that's what I had in my head. I think it was just an automatic response from myself - normally people are wanting to go from double to triple.

Personally I'm not fond of triples either.
