Campagnolo Zonda wheels to replace Shimano WH-R500???
I am considering upgrading the wheels on my Felt, possibly to these: http://www.shinybikes.com/bikes/campagn ... -2008.html
is this the best price for them - seems to be....?
Allegedly my Felt has Shimano WH-R500 wheels fitted, I can't tell on the wheels themselves, as there seems to be no markings whatsoever.
I didn't buy it from new, but the chaps made no mention of changing the wheels, so I will assume they will be original.
Would this be a worthwhile upgrade, and any idea what kind of weight saving this would yield?
Any other wheels from around £150 - £250 price range to consider?
I'm pretty light at around 65kg's, so hope that means I don't need quite as tough a wheel as some?
I can see other Campagnolo wheels at a lower price, so would appreciate some feedback on whether the current wheels are any cop, and whether an upgrade would be worthwhile, and if so what, if any of the above would you upgrade to?
Many thanks
Dan

I presume you are referring to the felt that you are linking to a photo of in your sig?
They certainly look pretty similar to r500s - correct spoke numbers and patterns on each wheel - but the quick releases dont look shimano (could easily have been swapped though) - does it say anything on the hubs? Something like WH-R500?
R500s weight approx 1884g vs 1,610g for the zondas - thats pretty significant - especially if the saving is at the rim - not sure if thats the case or not. Make sure you order the shimano freehub not the campag version!
£250 is a very good price for those wheels - although I have never used that retailer so dont know how reputable they are....
Also, by the looks of your shifters, you are running a < 10 speed setup - make sure the freehub on whatever you end up with is not 10speed only (i.e. new Ultegra > Dura Ace wheels)

Shimano WH-R500 (2005): 1,884g
Campagnolo Zonda (2006-): 1,610g*
Weight saving: 274g*
*Don't have any experience of either wheelset though.0 -
Thanks for that chaps,
Yes tt, it's the bike in the signature linky.
I can see diddly squat on the hubs, just jet black from what I can see, very strange.
It's a 9 speed 105 double, and yes I noticed the different option for Campagnolo or Shimano freehub - that would have been a bad mistake!
Didn't realise it might only be for a 10spd plus gearset though, thanks for the tip!
Thanks for those weights too, very handy.

I initially wanted Zondas for my Allez (running 9 speed Tiagra) about this time last year.
Was advised both on this forum and when I contacted Italian Cycle Products that to run Zondas on a 9 speed Shimano system I'd need to swap the freehub over (about 50 to 60 squid).
Not sure whether you can get around this with an Ambrosio or Marchisio cassette? :?:
I ended up with a set of DT Swiss wheels instead but I'm probably going though the freehub swapping process soon as I get the DT 1850's changed over to run 10 speed Campag. :roll:0 -
A second hand set ( leaving change for the paint job!!!)

IDan

How rude!
Don't diss the yellow peril 8)
Thanks for the replies (mostly!) and those 2nd hand ones do look a good deal, seems a bit strange to pay £300 for a set of wheels though, and then look to lose £150+ on selling them within the year - perhaps they are 07 models.
I'd be a little bit worried that they might have a problem though.Lagavulin wrote:I initially wanted Zondas for my Allez (running 9 speed Tiagra) about this time last year.

Thanks Lagavulin only just read your post properly
That pretty much seems to rule them out, will have a look at your other suggestion though.

i have had my zondas for over two year and they are as solid as ever! they are by far the most significant change i have made to a bike - including upgrading to a carbon frame. as far as running 9 speed, i did so for a year before upgrading (though this was with a campy group set). would highly recommend these wheels!0
