Old East Germany, anyone?

It's actually west of Berlin, out from Potsdam, around magdaburg, that I'm looking at touring through. Anyone been there, and know what it;s like for bike tourists.
Is it all a bit East European still, or has all that gone the way of all things?

Thanks

We did a tour across the north part of old East Germany from Hamburg to Szczecin on our way to Poland back in 2000. The route was a bit further north than where you describe.

Back then it was still quite old style Eastern block in feel with dismal grey concrete flats, but a lot of new building going on. There were a lot of cobbled minor roads which made for slow progress and a numb bum! The main roads were narrow and busy with heavy traffic. There has been a lot of motorway building in East Germany in the last few years so this might have eased the traffic on the main roads a bit.

There is some nice countryside and forested areas to cycle through, interspersed by some lovely old walled towns like Neubrandenburg.
