How much does your bike weigh ?

Looking at buying a Merlin Malt 1 ltd Ed Disc @ £425, Merlin have informed me that this will weigh around 28lbs.

My question is what is a decent weight for a middle of the road ( not pro racer ) xc / trail ride bike?

Does 28lbs seem like a resonable weight?

Cheers ,,,

28lbs is a pretty good weight for a £400 bike, most £400 bikes will weigh a little more like 30lbs.

I have an Orange Gringo which weighs in at 29lbs (total cost inc upgrades £700)

About 25lbs (some have said 24lbs but I don't believe them) for the 2007 Stumpy, close to 30lbs for the Rockhopper.
The old Stumpy (steel, fully rigid, loads of upgrades) feels as light as the newer Stumpy but not sure if it is - very stripped down machine though.

British Eagle must be the wrong side of 30lbs but it's pretty small.

Kona Caldera with some upgrades 27lbs - light enough for me so yeah that's a hell of a weight for the price!

Orange 5 Pro - between 28lb and 29lb - feels way lighter when riding though :D
  • I've bumped my Marin hardtail up to 31/32lb by fitting a Deity stem,Azonic strip bar and Halo Freedom rims, but it's a fun bike so irrelevant.

    My old Trek 7000 hardtail which cost £800 back in '97 weighed 27.5lbs,so yeah,I'd say a £400 hardtail @ 28lb is reasonable.
There's plenty out there at that price point that weigh a lot more..

My old Orange P7 with 80mm of front travel is 28.5lbs (rim brakes) - £200 second-hand. My new Commencal Meta 5.5.1 at 10 times the price is about 28lbs but then it does have discs and full-sus and can beat the average Lakeland rockfest into submission a lot easier than the Orange can.

My Giant XTC SX was 28lbs when it was new, which was a tad heavy given the price.
With the upgraded XT kit, ligther bars, stem, sadddle, tyres and Rebas its currently around or a shade under 25lbs,and with the new wheels will possibly be nearer 24lbs.

So a good weight for the price. My old v braked Rockhopper was around 28lb,too.

  • my o6 stumpy ht (with a few upgrades).tips the bathroom scales at just under 25 lb, which feels very good on the trail.
  • My Giant 840 (£440) tips the bathroom scales at about 31 - 31 lbs. But it's 9 years old, it's a 23.5" frame, and I'm 16.5 stone. Quite frankly it's me that has to lose the weight!

So anything in the 20-something range seems good.

well, depending on the price. my GT is 7 years old now but was 2000 when new, so is fairly heavy. next upgrade= the frame.

If i have weighed it right my bike as 27.5lb, a bit heavy for an XC rig but because it was a cheap bike i can easily kill some more weight.

    Going by the bathroom scales:

Stumpy HT - 26lbs (F80X, M4 frame, thomson stem+post, let down by crossrides + spesh revo sport tyres a bit)

FSRxc - 30lbs (roughly what I expected, upgraded bottom end model, swapped to Reba SL forks, Juicy 3 SLs and notubes'd it up!)

My stumpy was initially 27lbs which disappointed me a bit, before realising it had a full water bottle on, weighing pretty much a straight pound. Is there any cheap, accurate way of measuring this? I bought a cheapo import scales from ebay but they were dire, my bike varied between 5 lbs and 80 lbs. The expensive ones seem a bit much for scales :)

Take your bike to your local Weight Watchers session? They'd probably have pretty accurate scales.

Hey I said the wheels let it down a bit, I don't think it needs to join weight watchers quite yet!
