Currently have a 50-34 compact with 12-25 cassette. If I change the cassette to a 12-27 will I need to increase the length of the chain ? Sorry if this is a dumb question but I am a mere female !

  • you should be fine with that - particularly as you will (should) only ever use the 27 with the 34 at the front

Mere female? You need lessons from my wife!

... and yes, it'll probably be OK. Just try it because it depends how near the limit you were with the 25 sprocket. Be sure the whole set up doesn't lock up if you engage the big chain ring and the big sprocket. It's not a combination you should use but you could do it inadvertently and it's best if it copes OK.

Probably best to add a new chain at the same time as a new cassette, to avoid chain "skipping". Getting the correct length is covered here: http://www.parktool.com/repair/readhowto.asp?id=26
