Just had the 1st ride of my new bike.. Worked my way up an down through the gears and up and down the rings and it is apparent that there is chain grinding noise in almost every gear. Is this an indexing problem or could it be something more sinister. Was loath to ride it too far as the noise in some of the gears was like nails down the blackboard

Bike is a Boardman team that the previous and only owner used to go to the shop a couple of times.

Thanks anybody

can't actually find anything to do with cable tension adjustment. My rear mech is an SRAM X9 with no obviously apparent adjustment screw

It should be on the bar mounted shifter.

I've played around with the cable tension a lot now with no real difference made to the nioses coming from below. I'n different gears it seems to range from the front to the rear mech. Really don't like it at all as it sounds quite painful. Do like a nice smooth silent ride.
  • your previous owners few trips to the shop may have been a lot farther than you think. I had a simalar problem with a mint looking 2nd hand bike, and the rear cassette was badly worn. Check that the rear mech is directly in line under each selected cog, and this should be a guide to correct adjustment. If not loosen or tighten the adjuster on the gear cable. If you still have trouble a trip to your local bike shop may be reqired.
